I'm Dave The Lathe and I'm a woodturner in Blandford Forum, Dorset. Welcome to my webturning portfolio. I love turning local sustainable dorset wood where possible. I am a carpenter and Joiner by trade and have been learning how to turn wood since I was 14 years old.

I now travel around the south of England demonstrating my woodturning skills and giving woodturning lessons. If you want to learn how to woodturn then please check out my contact details and get in touch. Lessons are a reasonable price and give the prospective turner a one to one lesson where they will produce some woodchippings and create their own bespoke piece.

Location

I was born in Dorchester in Dorset but now i'm working and living in Blandford Forum.

Wherever possible we purchase our timber blanks locally in an attempt to minimise our environmental footprint. We source our local timber through Hazelbury Timber Supplies, a family run business located in rural Dorset. They supply us the finest quality, dry, barn stored dorset timber in materials of many types including Oak, Yew, Ash, Western Red Cedar, Douglas Fir & Beech. Hazelbury Timber Supplies also provide us with Oak & Ash burrs as well as spalted Beech, which is ideal for woodturning. 'Dave the Lathe' woodturning are adamant in their use of FSC sourced timber and attempt to use locally Dorset sourced  woodstock wherever possible.

New Music USA was formed by the merger of the American Music Center and Meet The Composer, two organizations with decades of experience serving the needs of the new music community. On November 8, 2011, their merger was completed and New Music USA was created to strengthen and grow the new music community.

New Music USA approached us with the task of bringing their look into the 21st century. We then applied the brand to its online presence, building a fully responsive WordPress-based website that showcases musician stories and makes it easy for donors to give online.

The website was featured on various design showcase sites and was an Awwwards Site of the Day in October 2012.

About Us

Welcome you have found the website of Dorset webturning authority Dave ‘the Lathe' Worth. Please browse around the website and explore the natural beauty of our wood. Dave is based in the Dorset town of Blandford Forum and has been woodturning for over 30 years. Dave is a qualified Joiner and Carpenter and has been woodturning around the local arts and craft fairs during this 30 year period.

Woodturning Gallery

We have created a wood turning gallery to detail Dave’s creations and wooden turned items which show people what can be achieved on a woodturning lathe. Please take time to browse the gallery exploring the different grain effects individual wooden materials possess and the different appearance of the same type of wood, one of the most satisfying things about turning wood is the uniqueness of each piece of wood, some over 100 years in the making

learn-to-wood-turn-250Learning To Turn

Dave is keen to pass on his enthusiasm and love of wood, he regularly takes his lathe to shows and encourages people to step up and have a go. People wishing to learn to turn shouldapproach Dave either at one of the local shows, or via the website in the contact us section. Rates are very reasonable and all would be students can be assured that they are being shown by a professional.

Woodturning Shop

The woodturning shop details current work and is priced attractively at the current market rates. In this age of plastic and manufactured materials our turned wood bowls glint and glimmer alongside the dull modern day materials. Proper wooden fruit bowls and ornaments are becoming fewer and far between as the traditional skills are left behind to the machined technology prevalent in today’s society.

Woodturning Tips

As the website is new we only have a couple of woodturning tips and techniques currently, please drop us an email if there is a technique that you would like to see featured and we will only be too glad to drop it in. If there is a technique that you wish to be taught, then investigate our learn to turn section for additional information.

Thank you for taking the time to view our website and we hope that you have enjoyed your website woodturning experience.
